Description

 

Platinum black, the element symbol is Pt, the atomic weight is 195.05, the apparent density is between 15.8 and 17.6, and the platinum content is more than 99%. It can adsorb a large amount of hydrogen at 0 °C. Platinum black or platinum asbestos can be used as a catalyst in many gases. Electrolytic chloroplatinic acid can also be electroplated with platinum black to adsorb hydrogen on the surface of gold or platinum electrodes, so it is also commonly used in hydrogen electrodes or other gas electrodes. Platinum black is insoluble in inorganic or organic acids, but soluble in aqua regia. Generally, it is accumulated on the surface of asbestos or porous materials. For example, asbestos is immersed in chloroplatinic acid or chloroplatinic acid solution, and platinum asbestos can be obtained by burning it out.

Platinum on carbon is used for catalytic hydrogenations in organic synthesis. Examples include carbonyl reduction, nitro compound reduction, secondary amine production via nitrile reduction, and the production of saturated heterocycles from their respective aromatic compound precursors.
